One really is just a product name and one is the responsible, industry standard numbering convention that has been running consistently since 1994. There is no connection with the name 7 and the version number not being 7. There are big kernel changes or redesigns that cause the major version changes that 7, 8 and 8.1 do not qualify for. It is built on the 6.0 family (Vista.) XP truly was 5.2. So, now instead of breaking lots of programs, with a 7.0 and 8.0, MS went with dot upgrades. When they changed to version 6.0 that broke a huge amount of software from XP looking for a version 5.x. That makes Win8 an even more sooped up version of Windows Vista, as it too is an incremental upgrade, not a full-blown new version. But it isn't a new version.just an incremental upgrade. It has the same underpinnings of Vista but has been reworked and tweaked to make it better.
